– VOLABO Presents Fourth Genertaion of its Electric Drive –
VOLABO’s 48-volt concept for the electric drive differs in many ways from conventional electric drives. ISCAD is an electrically safe and cost-effective drive without rare earth magnets. Instead of copper windings in the stator, the fixed part of an electric motor, VOLABO uses aluminum bars that can be individually controlled. This allows the drive to adapt dynamically to the load profile, which makes it very efficient, especially in the partial load range. With the fourth generation of its ISCAD electric drive, the young company has taken another important step towards market maturity.
The complete integration of the control electronics into the power electronics has further increased the degree of integration. The drive is now being tested on the test bench and in a vehicle in which the original drive has been replaced by the ISCAD prototype. With a length of only 33 centimeters, the entire motor including the associated electronics, i.e. the converter with control unit, is housed very compactly. Managing Director Florian Bachheibl explains: “This way we achieve a high-power density and the drive unit can be easily installed on the axle, as we have shown with our demonstration vehicle. The new generation also consists of fewer components, which makes the power electronics both more cost-effective and more robust. With this fourth generation, VOLABO is taking an important step towards a market-ready product”.
